Why do we check your urine
Tokunbo Benson CNL Urgent care
We will always request a urine sample for testing at every contact (inpatient or outpatient). The test is easy to do and can aid in diagnosing bladder and kidney infections, diabetes, dehydration and preeclampsia by checking for high levels of sugars, proteins, ketones and bacteria in the urine. You will usually be asked to give a sample at each visits in a clean jar. Please ask your nurse for more information.

Mohammad A Salameh WCMQ
In a time of uncertainty and fear spread by the current pandemic, your concerns as a pregnant woman are very valid. It is normal to have a lot of questions about the virus and it is also normal to be concerned at times. When looking for answers, you can find yourself learning something new and perhaps different every day! Getting the right information from the right sources is the best way of protecting yourself and your baby.
The easiest way to obtain counseling is from your doctor, as well as the Ministry of Public Health. In fact, you can find a document released by the Ministry of Public Health on Guidance for Pregnant Women and New Mothers. The document answers a lot of the common questions and these include:
- Can COVID-19 cause problems for a pregnancy or the baby?
- If you are pregnant, how can you protect yourself against COVID-19 ?
- Can COVID-19 be passed from a pregnant woman to the fetus or newborn?
- Can I touch and hold my newborn baby if I have COVID-19?
You can also contact the toll-free Qatar MOPH Hotline 16000 if you have specific concerns. Additionally, you can find Information about COVID-19 on our website. This way, you get the information that you need to protect yourself and feel relaxed while sparing yourself a lot of confusion and unnecessary fear.
Lastly, it is important that you reach out to others for support during this time. Your mental wellbeing is very important for you and for your baby, and our mental health staff, as always, are here to help.
Tranvaginal or internal scan in pregnancy
It is recommended method for assessing women in early pregnancy particularly if they have symptoms such as pain or bleeding. This is because pregnancy is very small in early stages of development (usually less than 9 weeks) and internal scan provides more detailed view of internal organs as well as pregnancy compared to external ultrasound (through tummy). A small probe is introduced in vagina to obtain ultrasound images. It is not a painful procedure. Many people believe it is not safe and can cause harm to pregnancy. This is not true at all. It does not use any radiation and is absolutely safe in pregnancy. It is also an excellent method for investigating certain problems in later pregnancy and your Doctor will advise you what is best for you depending on your symptoms and stage of pregnancy.
Pain in early pregnancy
Pain in early pregnancy is a very common symptoms and majority of women experience some degree of it. It can be related to conditions related to pregnancy (such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy) or problems which are unrelated to pregnancy such as urinary tract infection. The first line investigation in such cases is an internal ultrasound scan. This helps to assess for miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy which are common. Doing a blood test to check pregnancy hormone level without an ultrasound scan is not recommended as it does not provide full information required to complete assessment in such cases. You are advised to see the Doctor if you have pain who will advise on further investigations
